Coronavirus (or Covid-19)
BRCS does not wish to elaborate or go into detail on the advice given by government. However, we would wish to point out that the government is not recommending that parks, natures reserves, canals or rivers should generally be closed or that people should not visit them (as part of their one-per-day outdoor exercise session.)
Facilities at such sites are, however, often closed and social activities including working parties are cancelled. Social distancing is emphasised.
The following advice from Canal and River Trust will be of particular interest: “We are advising people to limit their use of the towpath and to be mindful of people living on boats; if possible, avoiding stretches where boats are moored against the towpath. People should strictly observe social distancing at all times, following the latest advice from the Government.”
GIven the known physical and mental health benefits of green open space – and therefore the cost of denying access – these seem sensible and proportionate measures.
